Turmeric

Curcuma longa

A tropical rhizome related to ginger, valued for its bright yellow-orange underground stem used in cooking, dyeing, and traditional medicine. Grows well in partial shade and is harvested after the leaves die back. Like ginger, its flowers when present draw bees, and its broad leaves provide shelter for small insects, rounding out the shaded lower layer of a biodiversity-friendly garden.
