Indian Birthwort

Aristolochia indica

Reference Link →

A twining, herbaceous climber with unusual pipe-shaped flowers, and the key host plant for Common Rose and Crimson Rose butterfly caterpillars. Used in traditional medicine, though it contains compounds that can be toxic if consumed. It is one of the few larval host plants for these swallowtail butterflies, meaning their local populations depend directly on gardens that include this vine; removing it from a neighbourhood can eliminate these species from the area entirely.
